Department of English

The department of English was established in 1979. Initially, English literature was introduced as an Ancillary subject at FYBA. In the following year, it was introduced at SYBA and then TYBA in 1990-91. The Post Graduate Program in English has been introduced in the year 2021-22. The department constantly strives to be creative and experimental.

The department of English augments the interpretative and expressive skills of the students in student centric environment to nurture and enhance these skills. It enriches students with both in depth knowledge of the subject and critical thinking ability. It provides an engagement with the issues as varied as identity formation, race relation, gender stereotypes and the politics of language. The focus is on an inter-disciplinary approach. The courses have been designed to explore the world literature, Indian literature in English, American Literature and Literature in translation. The classes are more in interactive mode where the students are exhilarated to share their own perceptions, ask probing questions and participate in discussion to boost self-expressions and voice their opinions. This spirit is prevalent in the changing classroom that has seen a widening of the students to include students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and learning curves. This diversity becomes a teaching method since the faculty believes that validating the experiences of the diverse students’ body is an essential aspect of methodology of teaching

The Department is privileged to have an extremely dynamic faculty whose expertise in critical theory has been widely acknowledged and whose creative writing has been published extensively.
